Lesson #1: Paper Birds

Updated: Dec 2, 2022

ABOUT THE LESSON:

This was our first lesson and the focus was on making paper birds that would go with our theme of hanging nature. There was the possibility of cutting out birds that we had drawn on pieces of paper and doing things like coloring them in with markers and or making collages on them. There was no requirement for how the birds had to be decorated as long as the were embellished in some self expressive way.

WHAT WENT WELL:

The lesson went pretty well overall and all of the students had a lot of fun and seemed very engaged in the activity. It was really uplifting to see all the birds that everyone had made hung up at the end of this class and to see all the joy it had brought them. We learned much about time management, pacing the class, and letting students move at their own pace.

WHAT WE LEARNED:

This was a huge learning experience for all of us as it was the first lesson we have had with this group of students. We were really just finding out all of the abilities of our students so I would say we learned a multitude of different things that we could do better for our future lessons. One thing we learned is that it helps to have things like the paper birds pre-cut out and have many multiples so that people have the option to make more than one and to increase accessibility for all. We also learned that some students needed more challenges- a few students created more than one bird! In addition, we learned a great deal about our students! They taught us how to adjust our teaching styles to fit the student and to ask questions to further their artistic process.

WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE:

The next time this lesson is taught, we would be prepared with more templates for students to use for their birds. We would also give more thought into what our stylistic goals might be for students and how we could relate them to personal backgrounds, cultures, and preferences.
