Lesson #2: Spider Webs and Leaf Catchers

Updated: Dec 2, 2022

ABOUT THE LESSON:

This lesson was focused on creating a 3D object that related to fall and the nearby holiday of Halloween, if applicable to the student. The goal was to create a "web" using sticks, yarn, and paper. The challenge for this project would be creating the web. All students were able to choose the colors of yarn they wished to use. Students could further personalize the artwork by cutting out leaves of various colors or creating a bug to sit in the "web".

WHAT WENT WELL:

Students were able to persist through the learning process of creating the web. For some students they excelled at the fine and gross motor skills involved in the creation of the web, while other students needed assistance to begin or complete their web. All students remained positive and eager to create their web!

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED:

Upon reflection of the lesson plan, some adjustments would be made to the organization of the steps as well as the beginning materials. The leaves and bugs would be better designed, cut, and assembled first rather than the web. This gives the students more time to settle into the project and gives the teachers time to assess each students' needs. The second adjustment would be to offer the base structure of the web ready to go, rather than having students create everything from scratch. This part posed the most frustration, as the sticks moved throughout the yarn wrapping portion of the artwork assembly. By having the base pre-assembled, students may be able to complete more of the yarn wrapping portion themselves with little to no assistance.

WHAT WE LEARNED:

Having a variety in options for students to select in terms of design is very helpful! Though Halloween was spoken about, we learned it is best to be inclusive and always be mindful of the wide variety of personal backgrounds represented, and not focus on a specific holiday and risk excluding anyone (thanks Jeff!). Additionally, having more accomodations ready for some of the more challenging fine motor skills parts would be wise! If the lesson can be structured in such a way to include more abilities, all the better! Lastly, collaboration is welcome! All teachers had parts in helping students, and our post-lesson discussion about the idea of creating one large web for students to all attach items to was a great thought! It was great to work together with students one on one, and thinking about how we can get a group to work collaboratively would be a great next step!
