This unit plan will have multiple projects that are age appropriate for middle school students relating to themes of community, positive change, and inclusion.
Lesson Title: Diversi-Tees! Sewing & Screen Printing​
Grade level: 6th ​

Lesson Description:​
Students will explore parts of their identities and relate it to their pieces through representational imagery and art making.

Humanity Concepts & Art Concepts:​
Students will learn how to make personalized, identity based designs to screen print with a resist on a plastic embroidery hoop or cut it out of freezer paper, print it onto a fabric patch and then sew the patch onto a piece of clothing, fabric or tote bag

Enduring Understandings:​
Students will learn how to create identity-based artworks. Students will design and create works of art using images, words and symbols that illustrate personal community or culture. Students can identify multiple points of view represented through artistic expression. Students establish and link background knowledge to what they create. Students can create and articulate works of art that communicate significant personal beliefs or sets of values that relate to their personal identities. Students will learn how to express parts of their identities through artistic practice.​

Students collaborate and create a welcome quilt to create a banner that represents the community of the school and makes everyone feel included and welcome​

Students will create a quilt by working together​
The quilt will be a large scale group project using 2D materials and techniques. The concepts for this lesson are inclusion, empathy, collaboration, self-reflection, expression, emotions, exploration, culture. ​

Students will build empathy by collaborating on a large artwork with their peers. Students will engage with new technologies and explore new materials in an explorative way that encourage curiosity and experimentation, similarly to the scientific method.
Students will express and reflect on their own emotions by exploring new materials improvisationally and intentionally regarding the topic of inclusivity through art explorations.
