Film day #2

Juana Martinez

Today was a workday beginning to end. Most groups were in the middle of filming but there were a few groups that were still creating their characters and sets. There is a lot of variety within our groups and their progress. We had a couple of groups that finished filming, a few groups that are close to done, and even one group that did not even get to start filming today. In order to make sure everyone is on the right track we decided to introduce a film checklist. We hope that this checklist encourages students to create a quality and detailed film. We noticed that a lot of the groups were rushing through the filming process and we think this checklist caused them to rethink and adjust their films.

Group 7

This group declared their film done and were working on finishing a different project from a different lesson. After we introduced the checklist, I went over it with them and we discussed different ways they could meet the requirements for their film. I noticed that their film only displayed the conflict of their story and did not include an introduction or resolution. Towards the end of the class they began filming again and continuing their story to meet the frame and storyline requirements.

Group 9

This group did a great job finding ways to successfully work together despite some students being more motivated than others. One of the students in this group is a lot less motivated and it is much harder for him to take initiative. His other two group members have done a wonderful job directing him. They frequently assign small tasks for him to do so that he contributes equally.

Group 8

This group really struggled with the idea of filming a short film with three hundred frames. They were very intimidated by this box on their checklist. It was a little difficult at first to get them to start filming but once they saw how well their film was coming together they were a lot more invested. By the end of the class period they had 150/300 frames completed and were more confident in what they were creating. Group 4

This was one of our most difficult groups. One of the students has essentially been doing all of the work and another has done little to nothing. We have thought of a couple of ways to get this student to contribute and we plan to assign them tasks, like creating the title page and ending credit page. We also plan to have a one on one with them to make sure there aren't any factors we are unaware of.

Some WAYS we would improve THIS LESSON in the future include:
  1. Have Checklists from day 1- many students felt alarmed at the required frames, or had to figure out how to include title pages when they hadn't already made them.

  2. Clarify expectations
