Self/Peer Critique
19 April 2023
Caroline Folz and Juana Martinez

For our second to last day in the classroom of claymation, the students were able to get feedback from each other and add any final touches they needed for the final showing day. The critique that the students participated in today had a front page for personal self and group reflection. On the back side was for another group reflection to allow all the students to have more.

The Peer-critique forms worked really well for a majority of the students and most of them really took their time to provide their assigned group with thoughtful comments. After reading the critiques they received most of the groups made adjustments to their films based off of the comments. They also utilized the checklists to finalize their films.

The Self-Critique forms were also successful. The questions provided and encouraged students to reflect on their film and in the ways in which it is successful or needs to be improved. The format of the questions definitely influenced their answers and guided them to answer thoroughly. Most of the students were also very honest when rating their own/partners participation.

I think adding a section for them to identify things they would change about their film or story to fit the criteria more would be helpful because it would give us insight on their understanding. Another thing I think we could do to improve our critique session would be to have more one-on -one time for those students who struggle with motivation and participation like this student below and others who did not fill out their reflection sheets entirely.

Students look over the feedback they received and add what is needed into their film. Re-watching what they have and working together to get the best outcome.

One of the groups sets for their film. A story about three blobs getting into a painting fight in an art room. You can see the set up, the students today where still working on filming, getting their final touch ups needed to be successful.

This is a group that has been working very hard the last few days due to being behind from unexpected mishaps. They have come very far in a short time, creating a strong story that teachers can’t wait to see.

Some WAYS we would improve THIS LESSON in the future include:
  1. Classroom management

  2. More confidence as lead teacher- Kelsey was hesitant on what to start with.

  3. Using the already addressed (via Mrs. Mills in her own lessons) language of Critique: Is it HELPFUL? Is it SPECIFIC?

  4. Have Self-Critique and Peer critique be actual separate pages for the sake of actual anonymity with ratings of partner collaboration (though students were very respectful of not looking at others' self-reflections)
